Description
Commonly known as ‘golden full moon’, Acer palmatum Shirasawarum Aureum has a dense covering of bright yellow leaves. In the autumn, these change to orange or red tones. This species is highly popular as it tolerates full sun better than other yellow leafed maples. When young the tree grows quickly, and as it matures it appears bushier in shape. Branches commonly grow in an angular formation making them a structurally attractive tree, especially in the winter when they are exposed due to the leaves having fallen.
During the summer the leaves will lose their bright yellow nature, turning a yellow-green. Acer palmatum Shirasawarum ‘Aureum’ grows well in partial shade or full sun, although full sun can cause leaf scorch. Japanese maples do not like to be dry or waterlogged, they thrive best when the soil around is kept moist.
