Description

The Tamate lantern hand carved from natural Sandstone is of relatively small stature,  but would still create an attractive focal point in your Japanese garden.  This lantern can stay outside in the garden all year round or be displayed indoors.

It is carved in 4 separate pieces and providing the base is placed on firm, level ground the other pieces will sit securely one on top of the other. Unlike tall column lanterns,  it is unlikely that the pieces of the Tamate need sticking together with an outdoor adhesive such as Stixall.

This lantern has a hexagonal lid and hexagonal lightbox with fine detail in the apertures.  As in many Japanese stone lanterns the lightbox features a full sun and a crescent moon aperture, however, the other openings include one with an intricate basket weave,  and three oval openings.  The fine ‘ribbed’ detail on all the carved pieces is particularly attractive and shows the finest hand carving skills of the stone mason.

A tea light can be placed inside the lightbox to create low ambient lighting.

Hand carved

This lantern has been intricately hand carved by an experienced Japanese artisan. Each lantern piece has been delicately carved from a larger stone block with specialised hand tools. It takes decades of practice to carve with precision. The beauty of this lantern is testament to the high quality stone used and the skill of the artisan.

From first contacting individual Japanese craftsmen in early 2021 we are excited that we finally have received our ‘made to order’ limited collection of stone lanterns and basins. We chose two master craftsmen from different regions of Japan to showcase the best quality stone and artisan talent. These craftsmen, the stone, and their lanterns are designated as traditional crafts by the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
