Japanese Style Cloud Trees (Niwaki)
History of Cloud trees
Cloud pruning or Niwaki originated in Japan, and describes a style of pruning trees to make them resemble clouds. This can be achieved using singular trees or by pruning hedges / plants grouped together. There are several species of plant which lend themsleves perfectly to becoming cloud trees these include Buxus, Ilex, Juniperus, Pinus and Taxus these will thrive in the UK climate. Some of the best examples of Niwaki trees is in the Ritsurin Garden, Japan.
We have been importing cloud trees to the UK for the past 20 years and have developed excellent relationships with growers across Europe. This allows us to find a variety of cloud trees and benefit from specialist knowledge.
The cloud trees we stock are evergreen, and therefore provide a focal point in your garden all year round. They are versatile plants and require very little maintenance, just cutting once a year. To maintain the quality of our plants we go on a nursery tour in January every year to select cloud trees which are of exceptional quality and have authentic shapes.
Ilex Crenata Cloud Trees
Ilex crenata or Japanese Holly, has small rounded leaves and is very similar in appearance to Box. These cloud trees are very easy to maintain as the foliage pads can be cut using sharp secateurs or hedge clippers. Plants in our range are between 25 and 35 years old, with prices starting at £700. We tend to stock the following varieties; Ilex Crenata ‘Convexa’ Ilex Crenata ‘Golden Gem’, Ilex Crenata ‘Gloria Gem’. Our Ilex Crenata cloud trees are all field grown in Northern Europe, so they are fully hardy for the UK climate.
Pinus Cloud Trees
Described as the ‘king’ of garden plants, pines are said to bring good fortune and symbolise longevity. They are evergreen, and can grow to various heights depending on the species. Pines can live for over a 100 years. Pines will thrive in acid soils where there is good soil drainage and like to be in full sun. Dwarf varieties make ideal cloud trees and we typically stock the following varieties; Pinus Mugo ‘Carsten’s Wintergold’, Pinus Mugo ‘Mops’, Pinus Mugo ‘Pumillio’ and Pinus Mugo ‘Gnom’.
