Japanese Style Cloud Trees (Niwaki)
History of Cloud trees
Cloud pruning or Niwaki originated in Japan, and describes a style of pruning trees to make them resemble clouds. This can be achieved using singular trees or by pruning hedges / plants groupedtogether. There are several species of plant which lend themsleves perfectly to becoming cloud trees these include Buxus, Ilex, Juniperus, Pinus and Taxus these will thrive in the UK climate. Some of the best examples of Niwaki trees is in the Ritsurin Garden, Japan.
We have been importing cloud trees to the UK for the past 20 years and have developed excellent relationships with growers across Europe. This allows us to find a variety of cloud trees and benefit from specialist knowledge.
The cloud trees we stock are evergreen, and therefore provide a focal point in your garden all year round. They are versatile plants and require very little maintenance, just cutting once a year. To maintain the quality of our plants we go on a nursery tour in January every year to select cloud trees which are of exceptional quality and have authentic shapes.
