Description

Through around 300 objects, this book examines contemporary Japanese design, spanning everyday items and packaging to interiors and lighting. It explores how Japanese design skilfully engages with both natural and synthetic materials, balancing deep respect for tradition with innovation and experimentation.

The selected objects are defined by a distinct sense of “Japaneseness” and the influence this has had on Western design. Rather than adopting a chronological or designer-led approach, the book centres on the objects themselves and is organised by material, reflecting the close relationship between material and design in Japan.

Following a general introduction, each section opens with its own essay and is structured around key materials: wood, bamboo and lacquer; paper; metal; fabric and textiles; ceramic; and synthetic and new materials. The book features work by leading Japanese designers, from Sori Yanagi and Shiro Kuramata to Naoto Fukasawa and Tokujin Yoshioka, and includes an introductory essay on Japanese design by Kenya Hara.
