Pieris japonica is an evergreen, compact shrub with glossy green leaves. There are several varieties of pieris, each with its own characteristics. We typically stock a number of varieties, some examples of which are listed below.

Pieris japonica debutante is a dwarf variety growing 0.5-1m tall and up to 1m spread. Has small dark green leaves and urn-shaped creamy-white flowers in spring.

Pieris japonica forest flame has bright red young foliage which turns pink to cream to green. Cream bell-shaped flowers are produced in spring.

Pieris japonica katsura has deep red young leaves which quickly turn glossy green. White and hints of pink urn-shaped flowers in spring. Compact shrub growing up to a 1m in height and spread.

Pieris japonica little heath is a dwarf variety growing up to 1m in height and spread. Small green leaves with white edging and sparse white flowers in spring.

Pieris japonica passion is a medium-sized shrub growing up to 2.5m in height and spread. A bushy shrub with red foliage in spring before turning dark green. Dense urn-shaped white-based, pink topped flowers.

Pieris japonica sarabande has tinged bronze leaves when young and in late spring produce white urn-shaped flowers.

  • Soil type: Moist but well-drained, loam, sandy, acidic.
  • Plant care: Pruning, if required should be carried out in mid-late spring, before new growth and after flowering. Prune out any damaged or dead shoots. For pruning we recommend using Okatsune secateurs. For larger shrubs, shears or mini shears may be more appropriate.
